French at STU
French courses at STU are designed for Anglophone, Francophone, and bilingual students of various levels of proficiency. In our small classes, you will get to know your peers and professors as you perfect your reading, speaking, and writing skills.
What sets STU’s French Program Apart?
- Small, engaging classes that emphasize personal interaction, discussion, and debate.
- Students can complement their studies with a semester or year-long international exchange in Québec or France. STU partners with universities in Paris and Angers to give students the opportunity to continue their studies while fully immersing themselves in French culture.
- Lectures and seminars are always taught by professors—not teaching assistants—which means students learn from experts in the field.
- Extracurricular groups l’Association française and Le franco-ciné de Saint-Thomas host French and Francophone language and culture meetings and can attend presentations given by high-profile French writers.

Our department offers a range of exchange, Travel-Study, and scholarship opportunities, including partnerships in Paris and Angers, the Explore program, and funding opportunities such as the France-Acadie programme and the summer programme at the Université libre de Bruxelles.

Each year, students take part in experiential learning activities that connect French language and culture to the real world through visits to local cultural, historical, political, and Francophone institutions.

Each year, guest authors visit campus to share their work and engage students in lively discussions about French-language literature, culture, and the Francophone world.
Association francaise/The French Society
Join our student-led French association for four fun events each year celebrating French and Francophone cultures, from game nights and holiday celebrations to coffee breaks and creative workshops.
French and Francophone Film Nights
Join us for four French and Francophone film screenings throughout the academic year—with free pizza at every screening!
“Le Salon de français”: A Francophone Space for Learning and Community
“Le Salon de français” (The French Lounge, ECH G13) is a welcoming space where students can connect, share resources, practise their oral French through peer mentoring, and engage with Francophone members of the university and local community.
Prizes in French
Students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in French—whether through exceptional language skills, academic performance, research, creative work, or oral and audiovisual projects—are recognized with academic prizes. The prizes are awarded annually to students in first, third, and fourth year.

Our strong focus on the acquisition of advanced levels of second-language literacy skills—listening, speaking, interacting, reading, and writing—results in an increased awareness of the crucial role communication skills play in developing and expressing complex ideas, forming meaningful connections with others, and working as part of a team.
