Seeing You

October 22-24, 2026, Black Box Theatre
A staged reading of a new work by Brianna Lyttle. Directed by Jane Metcalfe.

Raymond is in his third year of university. He has his circle of friends and that's that—until one night, when he is visited by the sardonic spirit Angel (on the nose, they know). Angel has been sent on a mission to show him all that he doesn't see beyond the cheery façades on the outskirts of his inner circle. Through reliving the moments he never realized he made oversights in, and confronting his own struggles, Raymond is shown the importance of taking the time to see someone and be seen.

 

Fracas

A person dies and splits into two psyches: Bardom (Sébastien Labelle) and Ziggy (Marie-Josée Chartier), two halves of one being together in limbo—the waiting room after death—where the monsters of contemporary life swirl through their overly receptive imaginations. In just one hour, FRACAS takes you on a psychedelic trip through a Wealth Management Convention, a folk festival, and a war—all inside a divided, short-circuiting mind on its way to infinity. Bardom and Ziggy can only surrender to whatever passes through as they pass away. This is very serious material, delivered by two very funny performers.

 

Shaked-Speare: Scenes from the Bard Shaken & Stirred

This lively production takes familiar scenes from the Bard and gives them an unconventional twist. Classic Shakespearean language meets contemporary theatrical styling in a bold, playful reimagining that invites audiences to see these timeless works - and their characters - in an entirely new way.

 

Two by Two

When a young priest arrives to lead his first parish, he believes that God has called him to the priesthood to save him for the world he was born into. But as he comes to know the members of his congregation, he is drawn into a community that challenges him to discover who he truly is—and the family he may choose for himself. Two by Two draws inspiration from the wit and infectious energy of musicals like Hairspray while exploring deeper questions of identity, belonging, exclusion, resilience, and joy. Both entertaining and meaningful, this new work brings a contemporary perspective to a familiar story, centering voices that have too often been erased from history.   Join us for a workshop presentation of this exciting work-in-progress.

 

Spring Awakening

January 28-30, 2027, Black Box Theatre
A new translation by Sophie Brander

Director and translator Sophie Brander brings a vital new translation of Spring Awakening to the stage, directly from the original German text. This production strips away decades of adaptation to return to the heart of the story: the volatile, beautiful, and tragic awakening of youth in a society that refuses to listen.

Supported by intimacy coordinator Alex Dawson, the production ensures a safe, highly collaborative space to bring this intense, emotional, and deeply moving story to life.

 

POWERPLAY

March 18-20, 2027, Black Box Theatre

POWERPLAY by Jena McLean, follows a fictional university women’s hockey team on their hunt for glory, combining witty dialogue and ripped-from-real-life-characters into a hockey/physical theatre mash-up.

POWERPLAY is produced by Solo Chicken Productions in partnership with Black Box Productions, the UNB Women’s REDS hockey team, and STU Athletics.

Songs for a New World

April 15-17, 2027, Black Box Theatre

Director Vienna Martin presents a queer-centred reimagining of this exhilarating musical collection: stories about moments of change, choice, rupture, and possibility. Intimate, expansive, joyful, and aching, this production invites us to cross the threshold together and imagine a brand new world.

Black Box Labs is a student-led collective which meets regularly to develop or share in the development of new scripts --from an idea in your mind, to a completed draft on paper. If you're simply interested in scriptwriting, have experience writing plays, or maybe have an idea for a script , Black Box Labs is here to support you!

 

The program invites actors into the process to work with the scripts, and culminates in a highly-attended public reading of the works in the Black Box Theatre.
